Beyond the limb
Each discipline plays a distinct role in the rehabilitation journey. Together, they form a single, continuous path back to a full life. Any one of these disciplines can help. Together as one team, working to one plan they do something more. They rehabilitate the whole person.
Orthotics & Prosthetics (O&P)
Orthotics and prosthetics are the foundation of mobility. Our prosthetist designs, fits and aligns each device to the individual matched to the patient’s body, lifestyle and goals. And because a residual limb keeps changing, especially early on, we keep fitting and refining so it works for the long term.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy rebuilds the body around the prosthesis. Before fitting: strengthening the residual limb, protecting movement, building the balance and stability walking demands. After fitting: gait training, strength, stamina and confidence so the patient relies on the limb, not just wears it.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy bridges recovery and real life where progress in the therapy room becomes progress at home and work: relearning the activities that matter. Our therapists retrain movement, build stamina, and adapt tasks so each patient fully takes part in life, not just manages the basics.
Psychology
Psychology supports the part of recovery that can’t be seen. Limb loss brings emotional challenges, including grief, trauma, and changes in identity and body image. Our psychologists help patients process their experiences, build resilience, and stay engaged throughout rehabilitation to improve long-term outcomes
Social Work
Social work connects patients to the support around them. Rehabilitation extends beyond clinical care to include family, work, funding, and community. Our social workers help patients navigate these challenges, access essential resources, and build a stable foundation for long-term independence.
The amputee journey
When a patient loses a limb, the path back to a full life is never just about the prosthesis. It begins with preparing the body – building residual limb strength, managing swelling, and protecting the skin. It continues through fitting and refining the device, then relearning how to move with it. Alongside this, functional retraining rebuilds the confidence to cook, drive, work, and live independently. And through all of it, the psychological weight of loss – the grief, the identity shift, the fear – is carried with support from a psychologist who understands the rehabilitation process from the inside. Where funding, family, and community reintegration are concerns, a social worker ensures no patient navigates those challenges alone. At Ability Rehab, none of these happen separately. They happen as one plan, with one team.
The mastectomy journey
Recovery from a mastectomy involves far more than healing from surgery. Shoulder and chest mobility need to be restored. Lymphoedema a common and often long-term consequence of breast cancer treatment – needs to be carefully managed through both therapy and compression.
